Farmyard Scene
An exquisitely preserved 1886 composition - a lively gathering of farm animals beside a weathered stone wall in late-afternoon sunlight. The third Tait canvas in the committed three-painting gift.
Quiet dignity in the everyday.
Renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and poetic portrayals of rural life, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait brings a quiet dignity to the everyday in this exquisitely preserved 1886 composition. Farmyard Scene depicts a lively gathering of farm animals - each rendered with characteristic precision and warmth.
The backdrop features a weathered stone wall bathed in late-afternoon sunlight, its surface dappled with ivy, while hazy treelines soften the distance.
From the wild to the domestic.
By the 1880s, Tait - already celebrated for his Adirondack and sporting scenes - had turned increasingly toward domestic rural subjects.
Though firmly rooted in American realism, Farmyard Scene reflects the lingering influence of English rural painting and the pastoral sentiment that connected Tait's art to his Liverpool homeland.
Confident brushwork, warm underpainting.
Composition. A diagonally organized scene, drawing the viewer from shadowed foreground to sunlit yard.
Color & Light. Warm ochres and earth tones dominate, unified by a subtle blue haze.
Technique. Fine, confident brushwork defines each feather and surface texture, layered over a warm underpainting that enriches tonal depth.

Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait.
Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905) occupies a singular position in nineteenth-century American art as the foremost interpreter of animal life within the Hudson River School tradition. Born in Liverpool and trained in lithography before emigrating to New York in 1850, Tait became a central figure of the American sporting and naturalist movement and was elected a full Academician of the National Academy of Design - the dean of American sporting and animal painters.
His works hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Adirondack Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the principal regional museums of the eastern United States.
